Why ITORO exists
A volumetric attack does not stop at the technical layer. From the moment a service goes down, tickets arrive faster than the team can process them, and management expects an answer that does not yet exist while the attack is still running.
The end customer does not see the cause on the provider side. They see a service that does not work, and they move it to a competitor. The result is a measurable loss of subscribers and revenue, not merely an incident recorded in a log.
The mission of ITORO is to reduce that window to a minimum for operators and data centres. The basis is not theory, but experience gained on the side of the network under attack.
How it started
January 2014. In the network of the cable operator TV SAT 364 in Lodz, attacks arrived on a schedule, at 17:00, 21:00 and 22:00, each lasting three to five minutes. That was enough to break BGP sessions. Monitoring based on NetFlow could not keep up with events that short.
The solution was pointed out by ATMAN, the upstream provider for that network, which also helped implement remotely triggered blackholing. Preparing the deployment took a day. After the BGP testing phase, the path from detecting an attack to a working blackhole closed in under five seconds, with the router itself processing the update in under three milliseconds.
Most of the attacked addresses belonged to gamers. A five second attack is enough to drop a player from a match, which makes detection time a decisive parameter rather than a comparative one.
The deployment was described publicly at PLNOG 13 in 2014. ITORO was founded three years later.
